FHS Senior Ashland Benner got to experience our nation’s capital over the summer as part of a 7-day REMC Youth Leadership Trip to Washington D.C. He is the son of Racheal and Tyler Benner.
The week-long trip included a stop at Gettysburg for a day to experience the rich history before heading onto all of the attractions in D.C., which included a trip to the White House and the National Museum of the Marine Corps, among other monuments.
Delegates on the trip also got to meet with Congressman Jim Banks on Capitol Hill for a brief interview.
Benner was selected because, as an (at the time) up and coming senior, he had the qualifications, He had to fill out an application, write an essay, and was one of the students selected to represent Steuben County. Others from the area in attendance were students at Angola High School.
Participating in the trip itself was completely free of charge, Benner said, and attendees also received free shirts as part of the package.
The trip is only for incoming seniors, and the 2025 trip will take place June 15-22. Applications for the 2025 trip will open on Dec. 2. When available, the application will be found at https://www.indianaec.org/programs/youth/youth-tour/.
